Algeria / Place guide
Discover Algeria
Algeria stretches from the Mediterranean coast deep into the Sahara. The contrast between the northern urban regions and the vast interior is central to its geography. Mountains, coastal plains and desert landscapes should not be collapsed into a single national image.

A Mediterranean north
Algiers lies on a bay and represents an important coastal centre. Northern settlements developed through regional trade, political power and connections across the Mediterranean.
Beyond the coastal cities
The Sahara occupies a very large part of the country and contains landscapes and communities with different histories. Algeria is therefore best approached through specific regions and places. Starting with the capital offers one useful perspective, but does not stand for the experience of the whole country.
