Discover Angola

Angola lies on Africa's Atlantic coast and extends far into the southern African interior. Coastal cities, higher inland areas and river systems create contrasting regions. Luanda offers an introduction to the maritime side of the country.

Coast and interior

The Atlantic shoreline has supported important port functions, while inland landscapes developed around other routes and activities. These different settings help explain the variety of Angola's settlements.

Luanda as a national centre

The capital combines political functions with a major coastal position. Its development is tied to Portuguese colonial history and later metropolitan growth. A city-by-city approach helps distinguish that particular story from the much larger country's regional landscapes and communities, rather than allowing one capital to represent every part of Angola.
