Belgium / Place guide
Discover Belgium
Belgium connects the North Sea coast with the hills and forests of the Ardennes. Dutch-, French- and German-speaking communities contribute to its cultural variety. The country's compact size contains markedly different urban histories.

Three cities, different roles
Brussels combines national government with European institutions. Antwerp developed around the Scheldt and its port. Ghent brings medieval commerce together with industrial and university life.
Waterways and urban prosperity
Rivers and canals supported trade and manufacturing. Guildhalls, churches and squares make parts of that prosperity visible. Coastal towns, former industrial areas and rural regions add other perspectives, so the country rewards an approach based on individual places rather than a single national city image.
