Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker represent the island setting. Cayo district and the area around Belmopan introduce a different, inland perspective. These nearby worlds have distinct histories and landscapes.
Which city is the capital?
Belmopan replaced Belize City as the national capital. The better-known coastal port and the inland administrative centre are therefore different places. Maya, Garifuna, Creole and other traditions add further regional distinctions beyond this simple urban contrast.
