Discover Burundi
Burundi lies in East Africa, with hills and high plateaus shaping much of its landscape. Lake Tanganyika forms an important southwestern edge. Changes in elevation distinguish several inhabited environments.

Two important urban roles
Gitega is the political capital inland. Lower-lying Bujumbura retains a major economic role beside Lake Tanganyika. The two places should not be treated as interchangeable capitals.
Culture in a hilly landscape
Agriculture is prominent beyond the towns. The royal drumming tradition adds a distinctive cultural history. Considering rural communities alongside the cities reveals both the older kingdom and contemporary society within the same varied country.
