Discover Cameroon

Cameroon lies on the Gulf of Guinea and extends far north into the continent. Maritime southwestern regions, inland high ground and a drier north create markedly different landscapes. The country should not be represented by one coastal view.

Capital and commercial port

Yaoundé is the political centre in a hilly inland setting. Douala has major economic and harbour functions. The distribution of roles helps explain the national urban structure.

Several regional histories

German, French and British colonial periods left different layers. Coast-to-interior transitions add a geographical framework for understanding those histories. Individual cities reveal particular settings rather than treating the capital as a representation of every Cameroonian region.
