Cape Verde / Place guide
Discover Cape Verde
Cabo Verde is an Atlantic archipelago off West Africa. Volcanic origins explain varied island shapes and elevations. Mountainous terrain on some islands contrasts with lower, more open landscapes elsewhere.

Separate island environments
The land is not continuous. Sea distances give each island centre its own geographical setting. One beach photograph or city image cannot describe the entire country.
Santiago and Praia
The capital occupies Santiago, serving national government from one island within the group. Urban life, volcanic landscape and maritime connections therefore belong together. Understanding the spread of islands first makes Praia's role clearer without treating the capital as a substitute for all Cabo Verdean communities.
