Cyprus / Place guide
Discover Cyprus
Cyprus lies in the eastern Mediterranean, with coastal plains and mountainous inland areas. The Troodos range provides an important natural centre. Different historical periods left distinct urban and archaeological layers.

A divided island
The political division is fundamental to the present map. Nicosia is divided by a buffer zone. The whole island and its different administrative situations must therefore be distinguished carefully.
Three different city perspectives
Inland Nicosia combines government and fortifications. Limassol has a strong harbour identity. Paphos brings archaeology into a coastal setting. Together they offer a fuller picture than a description based solely on sunny beaches and ancient monuments.
