Discover Ethiopia

Ethiopia lies in the Horn of Africa without a coastline. Highlands, the Rift Valley and lower eastern areas create major differences in landscape. Altitude explains much of the variation between its cities.

Highland and lake regions

Addis Ababa occupies high ground. Rift Valley cities connect with lakes and volcanic terrain. Bahir Dar's Lake Tana setting differs again from Gondar's imperial highland history.

Regional cultural foundations

Languages, religious traditions and former political centres shaped different places. Southern coffee landscapes tell another story from northern palaces. City-by-city profiles make those particular relationships visible rather than allowing the national capital alone to define Ethiopia.
