Two islands, contrasting terrain

Basse-Terre is mountainous and volcanic, with extensive greenery. Grande-Terre has different relief and more open coastal areas. Their close position does not make the landscapes identical.

Capital and wider urban network

Basse-Terre is the capital on its namesake island. Pointe-à-Pitre's surrounding region has another important economic role. French administration and Creole culture coexist, with individual places revealing different expressions of this shared island world.
