Guatemala / Place guide
Discover Guatemala
Guatemala lies in Central America with strong landscape contrasts. Volcanic highlands lead towards coastal plains and the lower northern Petén region. Maya culture is a living presence in languages and communities as well as an archaeological subject.

Highland and lowland settings
Central and western areas have pronounced relief. Petén has another geographical context and important ancient cities, including Tikal. Different regions therefore need individual perspectives.
The capital and older cities
Guatemala City occupies a high valley and concentrates government and economic functions. It is not Antigua Guatemala, the earlier capital. Keeping places distinct preserves colonial history, Indigenous traditions and contemporary development within their particular settings.
