Discover Iceland

Iceland lies in the North Atlantic between Greenland and continental Europe. Volcanoes, glaciers and indented coasts shape the island. Population concentrated around Reykjavík contrasts with large, sparsely inhabited inland and coastal areas.

Three different regional centres

Reykjavík represents the southwest. Akureyri occupies a northern fjord setting, while Ísafjörður belongs to the Westfjords. These cities illustrate why coastal position and terrain matter to understanding Iceland.

Sea and relief

Water connects places, but peninsulas and mountains complicate routes. Nearby settlements on a map are not necessarily directly linked. Individual towns reveal the inhabited geography alongside the better-known natural landscapes, with particular histories within their own fjords and bays.
