Indonesia / Place guide
Discover Indonesia
Indonesia extends across an immense archipelago between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Identifying the island is essential to understanding any city. Java, Sumatra, Bali and Sulawesi contain different urban worlds and regional traditions.

Cities across several islands
Jakarta and Surabaya lie on Java, Denpasar on Bali, Medan and Palembang on Sumatra, and Makassar on Sulawesi. Their geographical separation is fundamental, not a secondary detail.
Differences within Java
Bandung occupies highland terrain, Semarang the northern coast, and Yogyakarta a region with court and educational traditions. Individual city profiles preserve these variations instead of allowing one well-known island or capital skyline to define the entire country.
