Ireland / Place guide
Discover Ireland
The Republic of Ireland occupies most of Ireland's island. Northern Ireland in the northeast belongs to the United Kingdom. Island and state are therefore different geographical subjects. Atlantic, Irish Sea and southern harbour settings create varied urban environments.

Different coasts and waters
Dublin faces Dublin Bay in the east. Cork connects the River Lee with a southern harbour landscape. Galway stands beside the Corrib on the Atlantic side.
Three local urban histories
Trade, university traditions and regional services gave these cities different identities. Their individual river and coastal positions help explain those roles. Together they provide a stronger introduction than treating the republic as one uniform island setting.
