Discover Kiribati

Kiribati consists of widely separated Pacific island groups. The Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands together form an extensive country despite small individual land areas. Ocean distance and narrow inhabited ground must be considered at different geographical scales.

An island state across the Pacific

A conventional overview can make small islands disappear within the much larger sea setting. These distances are essential to the relationship between communities rather than empty space outside them.

South Tarawa's atoll setting

The main administrative and urban focus consists of inhabited parts of one atoll. Lagoon edges and narrow coastal strips organise daily life. This local scale contrasts strongly with the national spread across the ocean.
