Discover Liberia

Liberia lies on West Africa's Atlantic coast between Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire. Coastal areas lead towards higher, wooded inland terrain. Sea connections influenced the location of major urban development.

Coast and inland landscapes

Monrovia stands on the western coast as the principal political and urban centre. Its rivers and shorelines form one part of a much larger national geography.

A distinctive national history

Settlement by freed and free-born Black Americans connects with Liberia's origins and relationships with communities already living in the region. Both histories require attention. The country therefore deserves a more nuanced account than either a landscape description alone or a simple narrative of one founding population.
