Discover Maldives

The Maldives consists of coral islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka. Small land areas are distributed across a much larger sea territory. National scale and individual island space therefore require different perspectives.

An atoll system across the ocean

Lagoon, reef and open sea have distinct relationships with inhabited ground. Those natural forms organise the country rather than one continuous landmass linking all settlements.

Malé and resort images

The densely developed capital contrasts strongly with the familiar image of an isolated holiday island. It functions as an urban junction within the atolls. Keeping both perspectives visible gives the Maldives a fuller geographical identity beyond beach imagery alone.
