Discover Monaco

Monaco occupies a narrow Mediterranean coastal setting beside France. Small territory and steep relief created an exceptionally dense city-state. Country, city and individual districts should not be confused as separate scales within a larger conventional nation.

The historic rock

Monaco-Ville occupies the elevated older core. Its terrain explains a different form from later urban areas. It is a district rather than a second national capital alongside Monaco.

Monte Carlo and reclaimed ground

Monte Carlo is another neighbourhood, while Fontvieille connects strongly with land reclamation. These are not three independent cities. Their different positions reveal how limited available land influenced development through both building on slopes and extending the coastline.
