Discover Montenegro

Montenegro combines an Adriatic coast with mountains rising close behind it. The deep Bay of Kotor and inland heights give the small country pronounced relief. Straight-line distances do not describe the whole geography of connections between places.

Sea and steep interior

Coastal settlement has a different setting from inland centres. The transition between water and higher ground explains why nearby urban places can occupy substantially different landscapes.

Three city histories

Podgorica is the current capital. Cetinje represents the historical royal capital, while Kotor has a maritime urban heritage. Comparing their locations preserves distinct political, cultural and coastal roles within one national setting rather than a uniform Adriatic image.
