Discover Windhoek

Windhoek is Namibia's capital in the central highlands. Hills and valleys surround the national administrative centre far from the Atlantic. Its inland position distinguishes the city from familiar coastal settlements and desert-dune images of the country.

Development within higher ground

Buildings occupy a landscape with clear changes in elevation. The relationship between neighbourhoods and surrounding heights provides a more useful framework than one central architectural view.

Several historical communities

Local populations, German colonial rule and later developments contributed different layers. No single building represents all of them. Windhoek's particular highland identity therefore belongs alongside its national functions, rather than being understood as an urban district within the coastal dunes.
