Discover Nauru

Nauru is a small central Pacific island country. A low coastal strip surrounds higher inland ground extensively changed by phosphate mining. These contrasting environments are central to its geography and settlement history.

Coast and mined interior

Much habitation follows the coast rather than forming one dense inland city. The relationship between this inhabited ring and the transformed higher area explains the island more accurately than a single central map label.

No conventional official capital

Yaren is often called the capital because government functions are located there. It is a district, not a separate capital municipality. This guide preserves that distinction instead of inventing an ordinary city centre for the island state.
