Discover Nepal

Nepal lies between India and China. Northern Himalayan peaks contrast with hill regions and lower southern plains. These major changes in elevation create more geographical variety than the familiar image of the world's highest mountains alone.

High mountains and inhabited valleys

Urban and rural communities occupy particular lower spaces. The relationship between terrain and settlement is therefore essential rather than a background to individual monuments or mountain photographs.

Kathmandu within a wider valley

The capital occupies a high valley with several old urban centres and religious traditions. Its setting is not directly among the highest summits. Distinguishing plain, hills and great mountain ranges gives the national urban geography a clearer framework.
