Niger / Place guide
Discover Niger
Niger is a landlocked West African country. Sahara landscapes occupy much of the territory, while southern Sahel and river regions have different environments. State and river share a name but are not the same geographical subject.

Desert and southern river settings
The Niger's course helps explain inhabited areas within a much larger dry national space. Northern and southern landscapes therefore require different local perspectives rather than one desert-country image.
Niamey in the southwest
The capital stands beside the river far from much of the northern Sahara. Its position reveals an urban concentration within the national geography. Niger should also be distinguished from Nigeria, a separate country farther south with different cities and histories.
