Niue / Place guide
Discover Niue
Niue lies in Polynesia in the South Pacific. It is a raised coral island with a higher limestone plateau and steep coastal sections. This form differs from a low atoll enclosing a large central lagoon, an important geographical distinction.

Coast and elevated interior
The island has a relatively enclosed outline rather than a ring of low islets. Inhabited coastal areas occupy a setting shaped by uplifted coral and limestone.
Alofi and self-government
Niue has self-government in free association with New Zealand. Alofi on the west fulfils capital functions. Island and capital remain different scales even within a small territory, preserving the relationship between the national island landscape and one administrative settlement.
