Palau / Place guide

Discover Palau

Palau lies in western Micronesia within the Caroline Islands. Babeldaob is its largest island. Distinguishing the administrative capital Ngerulmud from the larger population centre Koror provides a useful introduction to the country's different island functions.

Two places on different islands

Koror was capital until 2006 and remained a major settlement afterwards. Ngerulmud occupies Babeldaob, linked by bridge with Koror but not the same urban place.

A western Pacific country

The Philippines lie west, Indonesia south and the Federated States of Micronesia east. Independence in 1994 and association with the United States add political context. Island geography remains essential to placing any individual administrative building or local coastal site accurately.
