Peru / Place guide
Discover Lima
Lima is Peru's capital and principal coastal urban centre. It forms a continuous developed region with neighbouring Callao, but the names Lima and Lima-Callao do not automatically identify the same area. Municipality and wider metropolis have different geographical meanings.

Historical names and urban scale
Ciudad de los Reyes recalls Spanish colonial naming, while Lima Metropolitana describes a broader contemporary region. The particular district and position beside the coast remain important when identifying a local place.
A separate harbour city
Callao retains its own identity despite adjoining development. A harbour photograph there should not stand without explanation for every Lima neighbourhood. The wider coastal strip and individual local centres together reveal a complex metropolitan environment.
