Portugal / Place guide
Discover Portugal
Portugal occupies the Atlantic side of Iberia, with Spain as its only land neighbour. Madeira and the Azores add island worlds beyond the mainland. Maritime orientation helps explain cities whose rivers connect particular hinterlands with the ocean.

Three rivers, different cities
Lisbon stands beside the Tagus, Porto the Douro and Coimbra the Mondego. Their water settings create distinct urban histories rather than repeating one Portuguese old-town pattern.
Capital, commerce and learning
Lisbon combines national functions with an estuary setting. Porto has a northern trading role, while Coimbra is known for university history. Similar roofs or façades do not make these places interchangeable. Each city belongs to its own river, region and continuing local community.
