Doha is Qatar's capital beside its eastern bay on the Persian Gulf. The curved shoreline provides a clear geographical reference. Development extends into neighbouring municipalities, so capital, municipality and metropolitan area are not automatically the same place or size.

Water, coastal buildings and areas behind them reveal more structure than an isolated skyline image. The name Doha is frequently used for a wider capital environment, making scale important to accurate location descriptions.
Doha and Al Rayyan
The neighbouring municipality belongs to the larger agglomeration but is not another name for the capital itself. Keeping both identities clear preserves particular local settings within the connected urban region of the Qatari peninsula.
