Discover Réunion

Réunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius. Mountainous inland terrain contrasts with coastal cities. The island's volcanic form differs fundamentally from low coral landscapes, while French administration coexists with a distinct society and varied historical backgrounds.

An island with several cultural layers

The older name Île Bourbon appears in historical accounts. It does not replace the current island name. Recognising the difference helps connect earlier descriptions with contemporary geographical places.

The capital occupies the north coast. A coastal image there cannot show the whole island interior. City and volcanic terrain together provide the framework for understanding individual urban locations within Réunion's larger landscape.
