Discover Bucharest
Bucharest is Romania's capital on the Dâmbovița in the southeast. Buildings from different periods coexist, including historicist styles, modernism and major communist-era interventions. No single architectural category describes the full cityscape or the extensive metropolitan region around the centre.

From Wallachian seat to national capital
Recorded in the fifteenth century, the city later became Wallachia's capital. The national role in united Romania followed in 1862, adding another phase rather than one continuous unchanging administrative identity.
River and metropolitan scale
The Dâmbovița provides a reference through widespread development. Municipality and larger urban region have different boundaries. Culture, government and commerce therefore need both local neighbourhood and broader metropolitan perspectives.
