Senegal / Place guide
Discover Senegal
Senegal occupies Africa’s Atlantic coast, with part of its northern boundary following the Senegal River beside Mauritania. Dakar stands on the Cap-Vert peninsula. River borders, an extensive interior and a projecting coastal capital give the country several different geographical perspectives.

Neighbours and river landscapes
Senegal borders Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau and largely surrounds The Gambia. The latter is an independent country, with its own river-centred geography, rather than a Senegalese province.
Dakar and the Atlantic
The capital’s harbour links Senegal with wider Atlantic trading networks. Its densely built peninsula represents a particular coastal setting within a larger country. Inland regions and river landscapes provide important counterparts to Dakar’s urban waterfronts.
