Mountains and river settings

The country borders Austria, Czechia, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. Carpathian ranges shape much of the terrain, while the capital belongs to the Danube region. Mountain valleys and the major boundary river offer contrasting urban settings.

An independent state since 1993

Slovakia became independent following Czechoslovakia’s peaceful division in 1993. Its cities have much older histories, including Hungarian and German naming traditions. Those layers connect modern urban functions with varied historical regional identities.
