Discover Somalia

Somalia occupies the Horn of Africa, facing both the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. It borders Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya. Mogadishu introduces one particular coastal city within a much larger territory whose northern and eastern shores face different maritime regions.

The shape of the Horn

The coastline changes direction around northeastern Africa rather than forming one straight shore. This physical geography helps explain Somalia’s place between the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean without simplifying local political or administrative circumstances.

Mogadishu’s coastal identity

The capital, also called Muqdisho or Xamar, has a longstanding maritime trading role. Somali and Arabic are important national languages. Its urban coastline offers a specific historical perspective within the Horn’s much broader geographical setting.
