Discover Sudan

Sudan lies in northeastern Africa between the Sahara, Red Sea and Nile basin. Its boundaries changed when South Sudan became independent in 2011. Khartoum’s river confluence provides a central geographical reference within a country extending across several different landscapes.

The Nile’s meeting point

The White and Blue Niles meet at Khartoum and continue north towards Egypt as the Nile. This river network links different regions. Sudan’s Red Sea coast belongs to a separate geographical setting beyond the capital.

Sudan and South Sudan

Older sources may describe a larger country before the 2011 division. Sudan and South Sudan are now separate states. Historical photographs and geographical descriptions do not establish the current condition or accessibility of individual locations.
