Taiwan / Place guide
Discover Taiwan
Taiwan lies east of mainland China between the East China Sea and South China Sea. Its main island forms the geographical core of a self-governed territory with a disputed international status. Taipei stands in the island’s north.

Geography and political status
Taiwan is governed as the Republic of China and has its own institutions. The People’s Republic of China claims the territory; diplomatic recognition is complex. A geographical description can identify physical places without treating a map label as a final sovereignty judgement.
Island and northern capital
Taiwan can name the main island or the wider administered territory. Taipei is a separate city within that geography. Its northern urban setting represents a particular part of the island rather than the entire territory.
