Discover Tanzania
Tanzania combines an East African mainland with Zanzibar. Dodoma is the national capital, while Dar es Salaam remains the largest city and an important coastal commercial centre. Distinguishing these roles is essential to understanding the country’s urban geography.

Ocean, lakes and interior
The Indian Ocean and great lakes frame different regions. Neighbouring countries extend from Kenya and Uganda in the north to Mozambique and Zambia in the south. Inland Dodoma belongs to a different landscape from the eastern coast.
Two major urban functions
Choosing Dodoma moved the capital towards the country’s geographical centre. Dar es Salaam retained substantial economic importance. Their complementary positions reveal both inland administrative development and the continuing significance of the coastal metropolis.
