Tokelau / Place guide

Discover Tokelau

Tokelau is a New Zealand territory in the South Pacific comprising three atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. Small areas of land are spread across a much larger ocean space. The territorial name therefore describes separate island environments rather than one continuous island.

Three lagoons and their motu

Each atoll has its own lagoon surrounded by narrow islands, or motu. Sea distances are an essential part of the geography. A location on Fakaofo does not identify a place on either Atafu or Nukunonu.

Fakaofo as a local introduction

Fakaofo provides the settlement guide in this selection. It is an atoll and administrative part of Tokelau, rather than a conventional city or an automatic national capital. Its lagoon and inhabited islets provide the appropriate local scale.
