Discover Tonga

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom spread across several Pacific islands and island groups. Nukuʻalofa, the capital, stands on Tongatapu. The country’s name describes a wider archipelago than that single island or the capital’s waterfront.

A kingdom across the sea

Ocean separates different parts of Tonga, even when they appear close together on a small world map. Its independent royal political tradition also gives it a different historical context from neighbouring overseas territories.

Tongatapu and Nukuʻalofa

The royal palace and national institutions give the capital a particular urban role on Tongatapu. Recognising the island first helps place individual streets and coastal locations accurately within a kingdom whose other island groups lie beyond the capital.
