Discover Rwanda

Rwanda is a landlocked country in Africa's Great Lakes region. Mountainous west and more open southeastern savanna create different environments. Equatorial position alone does not explain these local landscapes: elevation and lakes are also essential geographical factors.

Neighbours and regional terrain

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi surround the country. Their relationships place Rwanda within a larger network of highland and lake regions rather than one flat equatorial landscape.

The capital spreads across ridges and valleys. It shows relief at urban scale without representing every national area or the entire capital province. City, mountains, lakes and boundaries together provide the framework for individual local places.
