Discover Kigali
Kigali lies near Rwanda's centre across ridges and valleys. It became the national capital at independence in 1962. Government, economic activity and cultural institutions developed within a landscape whose changing elevation strongly influences urban form and connections between neighbourhoods.

A capital across several heights
A straight line does not describe every local relationship. Valley floors and higher ridges contain different parts of the developed city. Their positions matter alongside simple distances.
City and capital province
Kigali also names an administrative province whose boundaries changed in 2006. It is not identical to one compact centre. Distinguishing terrain, built-up areas and provincial scale gives the growing capital a clearer local identity.
